South of Walvis Bay the dunes drop straight into the surf and the only road is the beach at low water. Half-day dashes, long days with lunch on the sand, late runs for the light. These three carry the most travellers.

Salt pans and lagoon birds on the way out, then the beach run to the point where the dune faces come down to the water.

Half a million waders and flamingos work these flats, a Cape fur seal colony holds the sand spit at Pelican Point, and the dolphins come to the boats. Almost everything here goes out before the afternoon wind gets up.

Swakopmund is where Namibia straps in.
A German colonial seafront with the Namib starting at the end of the street. The dune belt behind town is the country’s adventure yard: quad tracks, sandboard slopes, fat-bike lines and the lichen plains beyond them.
Three things Namibia has and nowhere else does.
Deserts are everywhere and so are game parks. Sand cliffs falling into cold Atlantic surf, a seal city you paddle into and a plant older than the road to it belong to this coast alone.

South of Walvis Bay the Namib runs out of land. Dune faces over a hundred metres high drop straight into the Atlantic, and the only way along the base is a 4x4 on the beach at low tide, on a permit, with a driver who reads sand for a living. Behind the dunes sits a lagoon of international importance for birds, and the flocks lift off it all at once.

Pelican Point
A sand spit closes the Walvis Bay lagoon, and on it lives a Cape fur seal colony tens of thousands strong. Kayaks go out early while the water is still flat. The young seals come to the boats out of straight curiosity and stay alongside for the paddle; dolphins work the same channel, and the old lighthouse marks the turn for home.

The Moon Landscape
Inland from Swakopmund the Swakop River has cut the ground into grey ridges that look like nowhere else on the planet. Out on the gravel plains between them grows welwitschia: two leaves, no trunk, and plants that have been alive for well over a thousand years. The lichen fields turn from grey to green when the fog comes in, which it does most mornings.

Windhoek is a half day, and it belongs at the start.
The capital sits in a bowl of hills 350 km inland, and it is where the road trip is collected and the country gets explained. A morning takes in the Christuskirche, Independence Avenue and Katutura, and most of the long safaris north leave from here.

Etosha: park at a waterhole and wait.
The pan is a salt bed you can see from orbit, and in the dry months every animal in the park has to come to the water to drink. Game drives here are less about hunting for wildlife than about choosing a waterhole and holding your nerve.
Book these before you land in Namibia.
Most of the coast can be arranged from your guesthouse the night before. These cannot. They run on tides, park gates, fixed departure dates and a small pool of licensed operators.

Fog on the Swakopmund seafront is not a bad day.
The Benguela current runs cold water up this coast, and the fog it makes reaches sixty kilometres inland most mornings. It is why the gravel plains are furred with lichen, why the beetles drink standing on their heads, and why you want a fleece in January. Give the grey hours to the water and the museums, and take the dunes once it burns off.
